It's that glorious time of year when we reunite with loved ones (we neglected all year), stuff our faces to excess, and pass out in front of the TV. Perhaps a recalibration of the thanksometer is in order. A spin-off of the popular GivesMeHope.com site, this community invites you to document moments of kindness, generosity, and pure human love.
Despite its mainstream appeal, Thanksgiving is not for everyone. There are those struggling with food disorders, for whom this day causes endless conflict. There are the cash-challenged, who can't afford the gluttony we've grown to expect. There are the lonely, who don't have loved ones nearby. And let's not forget the vegetarians, who decry the animal cruelty. But there's one more group we often overlook: the terminally lazy! This community of lazy vegetarians offers easy recipes for an animal-friendly feast.
Just in time for holiday shopping season, this fashionista community brings you the world of haute couture in the form of sumptuous photos, video clips, and candid commentary. There's also a sugary sprinkle of mainstream movie discussions and debates on such pressing social issues as manicure styles and celebrity colonics. If you need a break from the daily grind to indulge your girlie side, this is twinkly pink on steroids.
Then someone contacted me through my live support text feature on my site. He started right off by addressing me as "sexy." Now, as everyone knows, I certainly am sexy. But somehow, it's off-putting when someone I don't know from Adam calls me that. Or "hun." Or "darling." Or any number of cutsy names by which you wouldn't address your female physician or loans officer at your bank. Or perhaps you might address a cashier or waitress that way -- but many of them would also immediately file you under 'jackass' for doing so.
So, of course, I got snarly about it. And he went off, probably thinking, "Sheesh! If she's this uptight in text chat, imagine how uptight she is in person."
But those of you who have met me know that I'm anything but.
What this poor sap doesn't realize is that he was a victim of natural selection. Most call girls wouldn't say so publicly, but I will: guys who approach us that way tend to be more problematic down the road than guys who approach us as respectfully as they would persons in any other business person. I like to be selective. I'm looking more for long term relationships than quick money. So I have to size a person up and decide if I think he's going to be someone I will be happy spending time with for years to come. And if I do say so myself, I do a pretty good job of it! Based on stories I hear from some of the other ladies, I seem to have a solid line-up of princes.
So just remember, guys: first impressions count. If you want the best experiences, it's better to be on your best behaviour when you first make contact. Think of it this way: while you're interviewing us, we're interviewing you.

Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to
lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit
lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

We thank you, once again, for joining us. See you next week!
Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!
Thanks

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.
Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.
We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!
As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.
One of my all-time favourite fast-food entrees was Tim Horton's Chicken Stew in a Bread Bowl. I only had it a few times, but when they took it off the menu, I cried.
We tried making it ourselves back then, but we used bread-maker bread, and it just wasn't the same.
So today I had a roast chicken leg-&-thigh leftover to do something with for dinner, and initially, I thought I'd make chicken pot-pies. Fred was out working on the car (...unsuccessfully, I fear) and when he came in, I mentioned to him that I hoped we could try bread bowls again this year. Today was really too warm for them -- this is a good hearty "well below zero" meal -- but he insisted on making me up a couple of small boules of French bread (using the "Artisan Bread in
These came out AMAZINGLY well! This dinner is a keeper, for sure.

I can't believe the Americans continue to fumble health care reform. I was reading an article today on some "militant mullah" in Afghanistan and the ideologies, loyalties, xenophobia and ignorance behind his voting choices, and I thought to myself "okay, so he's a lot like American voters." I mean, really!
This obsession with abortion is bizarre. Does anyone imagine that abortion is ever anything less than regrettable? In some cases, abortion is necessary, and best case scenario, it's the lesser of all evils. It's never a desired outcome. Still, I find it hard to reconcile "pro-lifers" with people who also are anti-health care reform. So we're supposed to force all women to carry pregnancies to full term, but we couldn't care less if all women have access to affordable neonatal and obstetric care? We're supposed to value all life from the moment of conception, but not enough to ensure that all children have access to best quality medical care we are capable of delivering from the point of conception onwards? Sorry, that just doesn't make sense at all to me.
The Stupak-Pitts amendment to the Health Care Reform Bill seems to me like so much ideological masturbation. How can Americans accept this from their elected representatives?

I downloaded Lynne Truss' "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" today. It's a book (rant!) about punctuation. My own punctuation is far from perfect, but I try. I love her style and wit. I recently read her "Talk to the Hand: The utter bloody rudeness of the world today, or six good reasons to stay home and bolt the door." (As if I need anyone to give me any reasons to stay home and bolt the door, eh?)

On paper it all made sense - it cost more to fix the jetta than the jetta was worth, I can AFFORD a new car, shouldn't I just get one?
But every time I look at the jetta, I feel like I've failed her. She's been with me all this time - 7 years! That's longer than ANY OTHER RELATIONSHIP I've had IN MY LIFE. She got me across the country twice, to any number of new places and jobs. Waited for me outside of my creepy boyfriend's place to make sure I'd be ok. Did everything I asked of her & asked for so little in return. She bore her scars with dignity. And now I'm just going to turn my back on that? Replace her with some pretty new model? This is how I treat her at the end?
See, irrational. But don't be mistaken, I REALLY DO feel this way. I cleaned her out this morning & felt super sad. The towing guy is there picking her up right now. She's being donated to a breast cancer survivor's fund, which could be her last brave act of altruism.
Seriously, d00dz. I loved that car & I kind of feel like a piece of shit.

Anyway, first night she and her boyfriend were there, their room was broken into. Most valuables were in the safe, but her iPhone and camera were swiped.
This put a serious damper on their trip, what with having to meet with security and such, but she's an experienced traveler (much more so than me!) and she knows it can happen anywhere, any time -- despite the best efforts of security.
So yesterday was the day they were supposed to come home. I was awakened yesterday morning by a phone call from someone identifying himself as a police officer. He told me that they had my daughter in custody. He said a search of her room had revealed a "key" of cocaine.
!!!!
Of course, I knew this didn't sound anything like my daughter. But still, stranger things have happened. And my shake-down artist commiserated, saying that they, themselves, felt it was a set up. He was dancing around to the point of asking me to send money to resolve the matter quickly and neatly.
Regrettably, I had been awakened out of a sound sleep. The cat had me up earlier and had mercifully -- finally! -- allowed me to doze off again. If I'd been thinking, I would have waited until he'd given me full instructions WRT sending payment. But no. Instead, I blurted out "and how do I know you're not the one who ripped off her cell phone???" Duh!
Not that it probably would have helped anyway. I sincerely doubt that the resort is interested in justice through the courts. They wrote my daughter a cheque to cover replacement of the items. I sincerely doubt they even reported it to the police. Police reports = crime stats and I don't think that serves their interests. Best to sweep it under the carpet whenever possible and deal with problems internally. (Most resorts are locked down tighter than Gitmo. You can leave if you want -- but they don't recommend it. Fact is, resorts are actually pretty good at security, although no one is perfect.)
Anyway, she took the whole matter in stride, but her boyfriend was hopping mad. Initially, I thought I had nothing, but with some coaxing from him, I realized that I'd taken the initial call on my (other) Skype number -- and I have that set up to record all incoming and outgoing calls with Skype Call Recorder, as I often need to record interviews or verbal instructions from my clients in my other business. It was only after he mentioned it that I thought to go back and check -- yes! I had some of our conversation recorded.
We had a bad connection through Skype, so I insisted he phone me on my home number. And that gave me a "last number" on him.
So I had a fair bit for him to give to the "security." Although, I doubt they were interested in using it, beyond getting rid of the employee most likely involved in the heist.
And now it appears that just about everyone in her phone directory is being hit up with shake-down calls. Sigh!
Some times? Staying at home is the best bet.
(Although, these days, even that's no guarantee.)
