Father's Day in the kitchen

Happy fathers day to all you guys out there I call Daddy! ;-)

We spent most of today in the kitchen.  We had to, really.  It's been so busy here lately that we were running low on some stocks like strawberry syrup, tortillas, sauerkraut, and spring rolls.  I might make some American Girl Scout Thin Mints later tonight from a recipe I found online.  (Or I might just crash.  Now that I've been in the icy pool, I'm feeling a lot more laid back...)

We've been making our own tortillas lately from a recipe we found online, and my husband makes a really nice maple baked beans which I prefer in burritos to conventional refried beens.  We eat them with grated cheddar, kalamata olives, and homemade yogurt rather than sour cream.  My GOD they're delicious!  We call them CanMex burritos -- burritos with a maple Canadian flair.

As much as we love to cook, the realities of my capricious schedule necessitate being able to put together dinners easily and quickly out of the freezer -- else order in (which is expensive and not usually so good).  We've made spring rolls a number of times now, but this time, we're going to put some together and put them in the freezer before frying.  I'm not sure they can go straight from freezer to pan (although all the filling is cooked). I guess we'll see!

I had the strangest thing happen yesterday -- man, I'm getting old!  A good friend had phoned me earlier in the week about visiting yesterday.  But Friday night, as I went to bed, I couldn't remember the time we were supposed to meet or whether I'd given him directions.  The next morning, I looked but there was nothing on my schedule.  !!!!

I knew he'd said he wanted to come yesterday, but wasn't sure if he meant 10 AM, noon, 12:30, 2 PM, what??  So I hopped my ass out of bed and got ready for the earliest.  The hours clicked by, and no him.  I wasn't sure what to think.

Around 1:30 he phoned to say he couldn't come -- family emergency.  But shockingly, he also told me that we had set no time nor had I given him directions. !!!

My memory has always been pretty good.  Until just recently (menopause??), if I thought I had an appointment and looked at my schedule and found none there, I would assume that none had been confirmed.  But lately, my memory has been so bad that I'm ever doubting myself.  When I couldn't find an appointment on my calendar for him yesterday, I automatically assumed I must have forgotten to record it -- and forgotten the details.

It's a relief to know I did not -- but a bit shocking to realize that my confidence in my memory has become so poor!

Oddly enough, I had a dream about him this morning. It was SO realistic!  Mina had come to retrieve me out of bed to her room around 4 AM, as she often does -- she likes me there to give her treats and affection and play with her when she's awake in the crepuscular hours of morning.  So I was sleeping in her room when my friend came to me, clad only in white cotton briefs.  (Which I think is not even what he usually wears -- but is my favourite, nonetheless.)  I awoke (in my dream) to find him sitting on the edge of the bed, and asked him what he was doing here.  He didn't answer, but asked instead if he was welcome in my bed.  I wasn't expecting him, but I took him in under the sheets with me, feeling his body slide in next to mine, the prominent hardness pressing against me.

It was so real that a little later when I awoke, I wasn't sure if it had really happened or not!  Bonus, eh? ;-)
